Reiner Knies graduated as civil engineer from the German Federal Armed Forces University München. Since 1989 he is working in the Department of Port and River Engineering in Hamburg.  He worked as a project manager for extension of waterways, for earth-moving for the container terminal Altenwerder. Since 2002 he manages the Engineering Department for dredged material management and management strategies.
