Pol Hakstege
Pol Hakstege is senior advisor at Rijkswaterstaat, Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. He is involved in projects on environmental aspects of dredging, dredged material management, ecology and flood management. He is manager of a team of eco-engineers, who strive for more integration in the fields of hydraulic, ecological and environmental engineering (Building wiht Nature). He is active in international networks (e.g. PIANC, SedNet) and Secretary of the National Committee of Irrigation and Drainage (ICID). He previously worked in geochemical exploration of mineral resources.

As a result of complex legislation, lack of space and public resistance, cost effective solutions for dredged material, are becoming more and more difficult to find. Re-use of former borrow pits is an attractive option, particularly when it offers opportunities for environmental enhancement.
